About The Artist
Born and raised in Colorado, Kent West was never introduced to the ancient tradition of Pysanky and the artwork of the Ukraine. It wasn’t until 1987 when he picked up an April 1972 copy of National Geographic magazine at a garage sale, that he was exposed to this amazing craft. Within the magazine was an article “Easter Greetings From the Ukraine,” and that was all it took to get Kent inspired to learn this craft.
With no formal art training, and using only the article as a guide, Kent practiced tirelessly and enthusiastically, using every egg “canvas” as a learning tool to guide him in the development of his artwork. He credits his mother, an artist, as one of his sources of inspiration.
For years he quietly satisfied his own desires for creative output, but when a friend saw his scope of work and offered to buy one of his eggs on the spot, Kent decided to devote more of his time to the pursuit of this craft.
Each art piece is a bit of surprise; Kent never knows what the outcome is going to be when he begins the process, but this unusual approach has produced a wonderful uniqueness and diversity to each egg.
